Drop Project's Green Mandate
Sustainable, climate conscious brewing has always been a priority for Drop Project. From its inception, the brewery has operated with a green mandate. Before the first batch was brewed, our first can and keg sold, we launched our One Brew = One Tree initiative with The Tree Council to offset some of our carbon emissions. At peak production, the brewery turns out ninety brews a year. Some quick maths will tell you that’s 90 trees planted. Recently, Drop Project has gone one further in supporting The Tree Council by becoming an official corporate partner and increasing our pledge to plant 200 trees or metres of hedgerow a year. In honour of our growing (no pun intended) relationship with The Tree Council we brewed Tree Love, a brand new Belgian Kriek style cherry sour. Read our blog post to find out more about this partnership. Tree Love is available to buy from our web-shop now.
Here are a few more ways we’re currently working towards being more sustainable:
· In the early days of operations, we upgraded all our diesel vehicles to a new electric fleet which serves all direct deliveries in the U.K.
· Where possible, we also use sustainable resources in packaging and production. Aluminium is widely recyclable and we try and balance our use of steel and KeyKegs.
· We recirculate our natural waste. Our spent grain is used as animal feed, and spent hops and yeast is composted and spread as fertiliser.
That’s not all! We have planned a range of engineering projects to allow us to achieve the following:
· CO2 capture and redeployment. This will allow us to recycle naturally occurring fermentation CO2 and reduce our dependency on industrial gas supply.
· Nitrogen harvesting. Capturing, separating, and storing nitrogen from the air to allow us to eliminate our need for external industrial gas supply.
· Rainwater harvesting. This will reduce our reliance on mains supply.
· Heat recovery and recycling from our brewing process and plant and machinery waste heat. Ensuring we use as little KW as possible.
